Cheap car insurance firm calculates football miles

Football fans (especially those from Sunderland) are being advised to check that their cheap car insurance offers the cover they need.

UK motor insurance company LV= has estimated that followers of Premier League teams would have to drive an average of 5,554 miles across the length and the breadth of the country to watch their club play all away games.

LV= found that Sunderland supporters would have to be the most dedicated, with local fans having to drive 7,581 miles to see their team play at every game. However, followers of the more centrally-placed Derby County would have a substantially lower mileage; they would need to cover just 3,253 miles to see every away match.

As well as the mileage, the cheap car insurance company also looked at how long fans have to spend behind the wheel travelling to and from football matches. According to its findings, Portsmouth supporters face the most time consuming journeys at 128 hours, compared to Aston Villa fans who average just 74 hours.

A spokesperson for LV= commented: "Die-hard local football fans who drive to all their team's away games would spend an average of four full days on the road, covering well over 5,000 miles in a season. This can be a costly labour of love when you take into account season tickets, motorway lunches, match day programmes and of course petrol."With all these miles travelled for the love of football, it's vital that fans who drive make sure their vehicles are well-maintained and that they have adequate insurance and breakdown cover, in case the worst should happen on the way to the stadium. After all, no football fan wants to miss a big match because they are stuck at the side of the road without help."
