Figures support prediction from online car insurance firm

Figures from the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) on the most popular car colours suggest that predictions made by an online car insurance company are starting to become reality.

Yesinsurance.co.uk, a UK motor insurance company, last year predicted that black would take silver's place as the favourite colour for cars.

It made this prediction based on its own research which found 30% of motorists would choose black over any other colour if they were to purchase a new car. In comparison, 27% of those interviewed by the online car insurance firm opted for silver, while 17% went for blue.

This year's car sales statistics, as put together by the SMMT, reveal that black has gone from third favourite to second favourite in the stakes, overtaking blue.

A spokesperson for yesinsurance.co.uk said: "The way things are moving, we would predict that black may overtake silver as the most popular colour for new cars within the next three years.

"With demand increasing and supply constrained by the number of black vehicles currently on the road, this may lead to increasing prices for black used cars."

However, he also warned that black cars may be less visible on the road than their silver counterparts, especially at night.
