Cheap car insurance broker warns of 'cash for crash' danger

A cheap car insurance broker from Shropshire is warning motorists of the danger posed by staged car crashes.

With figures from the Insurance Fraud Bureau suggesting that there have been more than 22,000 staged accidents since 1999, Ludlow-based broker Smart & Cook is concerned that motorists are facing a growing risk of injury from these fraudsters.

A spokesperson for the motor insurance firm said: "Both the police and insurance companies are increasingly concerned by the rising number of such incidents in the area.

"Not only are such crashes a deliberate attempt to defraud insurance companies, but it is also hard to overstate how potentially dangerous these crimes are."

Smart & Cook also points out that as well as the injuries that can result from such crashes, motorists also face financial effects in the form of increased motor insurance premiums.

The cheap car insurance firm's spokesperson advised: "We urge every driver to be cautious and to alert both the police and their insurance company if they have any reason to believe an accident has been staged."
