Cheap car insurance firm conducts Friday 13th research
A cheap car insurance company has revealed that motorists may have a greater chance of crashing on Friday the 13th.
Norwich Union found that accident claims went up by 13% on the day-date combination of Friday and the 13th, but that claims were lower than average when the 13th was not a Friday.
As well as a rise in the number of claims, the UK motor insurance firm also noted an increase in the value of claims on Friday the 13ths. Its research showed that it was the second worst day of the month for high cost claims, with the first day of the month being the only one that had more expensive claims.
A spokesperson for Norwich Union said: "Our analysis on dangerous days for driving has given some credence to people's superstitions regarding Friday the 13th.
"Though it's difficult to say for certain why this is, one reason could be that people alter their driving behaviour in response to a perceived 'unlucky' day.
"In reality, changing driving behaviour in reaction to a perceived risk - as opposed to a real risk such as snow or ice - does not necessarily translate to safer driving.
"Therefore, by altering driving behaviour to change their luck, motorists may create a decidedly unlucky self-fulfilling prophecy," he theorised.
The cheap car insurance company's research also revealed that the 26th was the "safest" day to travel on the road.
