Car insurance for low mileage may cut driving costs

With fuel prices having hit a record high in November 2010, car insurance for low mileage seems like an attractive prospect for drivers who either can't afford to do much motoring or are looking for best value for money.

Cheap car insurance is even more important as part of the equation of running a car when looked at in parallel with unleaded petrol prices now up by 3p a litre to between 119.1p and 122.1p.

According to the latest AA survey, diesel has risen even more, by 3.2p a litre and now ranges between 123p and 126.2p. The difference between unleaded and diesel is 4.1p a litre.

Prices at supermarkets are still the cheapest option, with the gap between their forecourts and the UK average for unleaded petrol being 1.9p a litre.

The most expensive area of the UK for unleaded petrol is London and the South East and, for diesel, it's Wales and Scotland. Yorkshire and Humberside have the lowest prices for both types of fuel.

The report adds that out of all European countries, the UK has the tenth-highest price for unleaded and the second highest cost for diesel.

Drivers who buy car insurance for low mileage and travel less than 6,000 miles a year can have the satisfaction of saving money both on their insurance policy and on the cost of fuel while still being able to drive when necessary.
