Cheap car insurance company reveals strangest claims of 2006

A cheap car insurance firm has released a list of its funniest and most bizarre motor insurance claims.

AA Insurance reviewed the 180,000 car insurance claims made by its million-plus customer base in 2006 in order to get a pick of the best.

The first funny incident reported by the cheap car insurance company was that of the rampaging bollard.

There are thousands of accidents involving bollards in the UK each year, many of which cause minor damage to the cars involved. Most of these are the car owner's fault but one unlucky person, known as Mrs X, lost her cheap car insurance after claiming that 'a car park bollard ran into me.'

Another motorist ran into trouble after a vehicle shed a rather unusual load right in front of him.

Mr B described how the accident occurred, saying, "A carpet literally flew out of the van and unrolled itself. It was a red carpet so I drove over it."

Kevin Sinclair, the managing director of AA Insurance, commented: "We're used to receiving conventional claims for car damage or handbag theft but it's always interesting to hear the more unusual claims people make.

"It just goes to show, you need to ensure you're covered for all eventualities however far-fetched they might seem."
