Parents told to remember car insurance quotes

Research from an online car insurance comparison service has revealed that young drivers' car insurance quotes could cost more than the vehicles themselves.

GoCompare.com has found that mums and dads are willing to spend an average of £1,014 on helping their child get their first set of wheels. However, the study also highlighted the need for parents to consider how much the car insurance quotes will be for the vehicle that they buy.

A spokesperson for the car insurance website said: "The latest premium index studies show that car insurance premiums have reached their highest ever level - both for comprehensive cover and for third party, fire and theft insurance which is typically bought by young and inexperienced drivers."

GoCompare.com went on to offer parents advice on choosing a car for their offspring which won't cost too much when it comes to motor insurance. The company said that cars with letters such as "sxi" or "gti" after the engine size should be avoided, as should modified vehicles.

It also recommended that the parents of prospective drivers should compare car insurance quotes rather than simply plumping for the first one they get.

On this subject, the GoCompare spokesperson said: "The difference in premiums between insurers for young drivers is often greater the younger the driver - making it all the more important to shop around for the best deal."
