Goodwood motor sport revival roaring success
Premier Sussex estate Goodwood played host to the world's most authentic celebration of historic motor cars during the September revival event - and probably the most expensive cumulative car insurance tab that's ever met in one place.
As the surrounding Chichester area basked in warm sunshine, blue skies and temperatures touching 20 celsius, crowds flocked to the weekend meeting, jamming surrounding roads including the arterial A27.
Staged in the evocative time capsule of the 1950s and 1960s, the legendary Goodwood race circuit epitomises the glamour and romance of UK motor racing as it used to be. Recreating a golden era of motor sport, the revival was home to exciting, dramatic wheel-to-wheel racing around the preserved Goodwood race track.
Period vehicles, aircraft, entertainment, glamour and a sophisticated, genteel atmosphere typical of the bygone era ensured a capacity crowd of motor sport lovers and socialites dressed to the nines in period fashions and styles.
The brand names read like a Who's who of the world of motor sport, from the past right up to the present day - Alfa Romeo, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, Maserati... an elite collection of the most powerful, successful marques of 20th and 21st century times.
Former world class drivers Stirling Moss and Derek Bell were in action on the track while Marilyn Monroe mixed with the sun-loving crowds at the tenth anniversary meeting.
One proud owner of a Jaguar estimated to be valued at the million-pound mark was left ruing disaster after attending the weekend event.
Parking up at evening time in leafy Midhurst, a BMW was rear-shunted into one side of his valuable vehicle by a young driver in a Vauxhall. The responsible Vauxhall driver, said to be recently-qualified, had bought his car insurance just weeks before. His quote could be higher at renewal time.
