Uninsured drivers face government crackdown
Millions of motorists who are trying to get away with the cheapest car insurance - i.e. no cover at all - face a new crackdown by the UK government.
Insurance is required by law to drive on UK roads and lawmakers are starting to get tougher to tackle those who try to avoid buying cover.
Vehicle details on the DVLA register are due to be made available to insurance enforcing agencies, including the police, to make it easier to find cars that are uninsured.
Under the 2006 Road Safety Act, the government is about to force registered keepers of vehicles to prove they have cover. It plans to shortly introduce enforcement regulations.
The intention is that road tax records held by the DVLA will be cross-checked with insurance databases. It is believed this will help authorities to spot drivers failing to purchase cover.
Numbers of motorists driving without cover are continuing to grow as insurance premium costs also rise, yet it is a crime to drive without at least third party cover.
It is claimed that the law courts are failing to be sufficiently tough with uninsured drivers. Many are able to escape with relatively low fines compared to the cost of cover that might be over £1000.
The best option for people searching for the cheapest car insurance is to shop around by using the Internet to help track down the lowest car insurance quotes.
