Handbrake repairs may affect Vauxhall car insurance
Vauxhall has responded to handbrake problems revealed by Which? magazine, by announcing that it is to modify this feature on a quarter of a million cars in the UK. This should help to avoid unnecessary Vauxhall car insurance claims.
Last July, Which? made its first reports on the problems with Vectra and Signum models with manual transmissions. Vauxhall's initial tests could not replicate the problem, but more recently it has been shown that applying the handbrake with the release button depressed could leave the mechanism partially released, leading to damage to the car and to the driver's cheap motor insurance premium.
However, Vauxhall maintains that the system is safe, and that following the advice in the Highway Code (ie using the gearbox to support the parking brake and turning the wheels toward the kerb) will help prevent any roll that could lead to a motor insurance claim.
Despite this insistence, the car company will modify the quarter-million cars affected by this problem on a phased basis, depending on the availability of parts. It is unclear whether Vauxhall car insurance companies will re-examine their premium charges in response to this.
