Cheap car insurance could be lost in harsh weather

A top cheap car insurance provider has recently released some statistics which revealed a rise in breakdowns last year by 22% due to the icy conditions endured by the UK.

The company is trying to ensure that this year, particularly in the North West, drivers are prepared for the harsh weather conditions.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) said that in December 2011 there were 278,000 claims for vehicle damage which resulted in costs of £530 million, mainly caused by cars which were travelling at low speeds in icy conditions.

Reportedly, the car insurance provider received a record number of calls to its breakdown service, not only because of accidents but also because vehicles would not start.

Motorists living in the North West region of the country are asked to be extra vigilant through the upcoming months if they do not want to see their car insurance quote rise due to a crash.

The North West experienced some of the country's worst weather in 2011 with snow falling in Manchester this time last year before spreading further north and causing delays in traffic.

A similar cold weather snap is expected soon, so insurance firms are warning customers to be fully prepared for the winter months ahead.
