Motor insurance evaders face new offence under Road Safety Bill
The Road Safety Bill is to make a new offence that specifically targets uninsured drivers who have killed someone on the roads.
The offence, entitled causing death by driving while unlicensed, disqualified or uninsured, carries with it up to 2 years imprisonment.
It is hoped this measure will go some way to properly penalising drivers who have failed to get a motor insurance quote and cause a serious accident. At present, a motorist could get away with just a fine.
This offence is just one piece of a raft of legislation being brought in by the Road Safety Bill.
Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman commented: "We believe the new offences of causing death by careless driving and causing death while driving unlicensed strike the right balance between the level of criminal fault on the part of the bad driver and the devastation their actions can cause.
"We've responded to the concerns of families, victims, road safety groups and the police. That's why we've created a tougher legal framework to deal with bad driving."
"I fully support the new measures being brought in by the Road Safety Bill," said cheap motor insurance quote expert Corrine Aldous of duck2water Car Insurance Services.
"Perhaps harsher penalties will put off some of the many motorists who drive on our roads without car insurance," she added.
