Headrest adjustment for motor insurance holders

Car insurance customers are among those who have been reminded of the importance of keeping their car headrests in the optimum driving position by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

Large numbers of people regularly make cheap car insurance claims after sustaining neck and spinal injuries, such as whiplash, in rear-end collisions. Motorists have been advised to adjust their headrests in order to lessen the damage caused during such accidents.

The head of training at the IAM said that drivers should ensure that the tops of the fittings are at the same height as the tops of their heads. He also reminded drivers that if the rests obstruct their line of sight, they should use the vehicle's mirrors to help them.

He went on to say, "Not all head restraints are adjustable, but where they are, make sure they are placed high and close enough to stop your head going backwards if you crash. The head restraint should be level with the top of your head for maximum protection."

This advice was given after the IAM stated that motorists could reduce their chances of having accidents, and making car insurance claims, by keeping their speed to a reasonable level and remaining focussed on the road.
