Cheap car insurance firms warn motorists of clock change risk

Cheap car insurance and other motoring firms are warning drivers that the clock change on the 29th October usually signals a rise in motor insurance claims.

Lloyds TSB Autolease sees the number of rental cars needing glass replacement rocket up by 55% between October and November.

Marcus Puddy of Lloyds TSB, which supplies cheap car insurance as well as rental cars, said: "When the clocks go back and it gets dark earlier, criminals use the twilight as an opportunity for theft.

"Many people find that they don't leave work until after dark so criminals are free to target the large number of vehicles left unattended in unlit car parks."

One of the newest firms to start offering cheap car insurance, American Express, has published statistics that show that gloomy evenings do not just increase the number of car break-ins. It found that 50% of fatal car accidents occur while driving after dark, even though just 25% of motoring is done at night.

Corrine Aldous of duck2water Car Insurance Services commented: "You can reduce the chance of having to make a claim on your motor insurance policy this autumn by ensuring you stick to well-lit car parks and by not leaving any valuables in your car."
