Operation Datsun reduces thefts from cars

The problem of finding cheap car insurance in a high car crime area could be aided with the use of high visibility signs according to an initiative run by police in Fulwood, Preston.

Ten signs were put up in the St. Matthew's area of Preston in a bid to warn residents and visitors to remove valuables from their cars.

The signs were part of Operation Datsun; an on-going measure to prevent the rising car crime statistics in the area.

A total of 104 car crime offences were recorded in the area in 2006/07, but this figure dropped sharply to 75 in 2007/08 following the introduction of the signs.

The signs were sited on lampposts in the areas with the highest car crime statistics and it appears to have proved that prevention may well be easier than cure; remove temptation from car criminals and the crimes will not occur.

If theft statistics continue to fall in high car crime areas such as Fulwood then cheap car insurance is far more likely to be on the horizon in these areas.
