Iggy Pop ad banned by watchdog for being misleading
An advert promoting insurance for cars starring gyrating rock star Iggy Pop has been banned by the UK's advertising watchdog after it was adjudged to be misleading.
The Swiftcover ad had been running for many weeks before the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) stepped in this month to demand it must not be run again in the same form.
The ASA received complaints from 12 people who were unhappy that the ad suggested the star had a policy when, upon investigating, it was discovered that cheap motor cover quotes were not available to musicians and entertainers at the time.
An ASA statement said, "We. noted Iggy Pop stated 'I got it Swiftcovered. I got insurance on my insurance!' in the ad, and considered some viewers might interpret that to mean Iggy Pop held a policy with Swiftcover and that their insurance cover did extend to musicians and those who worked in the entertainment industry."
Swiftcover - owned by the insurer AXA - has now begun offering policies to musicians and entertainers, apparently since the adverts started and complaints were made to the ASA. It is planned that Iggy Pop will carry on endorsing the company.
The firm is reported to have said the rock star was not chosen for the insurance for cars campaign for his occupation as a musician but because of his reputation for fast-living and living life to the full.
