Rise in claims on insurance for car drivers during snow
Claims on insurance for car drivers increased by about double during snowy conditions in the UK - and more claims are expected as more freezing weather is forecast.
Many drivers suffered minor collisions with other vehicles, trees, walls and lampposts as they slid or were shunted across icy roads.
Motoring organisations warned car owners to stay at home or risk losing no claims bonuses and subsequent increases in cheap car insurance. They said many motorists were unaware of how to handle the snowy conditions.
To avoid accidents and to try to drive as safely as possible, advice given by the AA and RAC was to drive with skill and care. Tips include pulling away in second gear, not first, to keep down engine revs and avoid wheel spin.
As well as an increase in claims on insurance for car drivers, thousands more calls were also made to breakdown organisations from stranded motorists - about 50% more than usual.
