Drivers warned about mis-fueling

The typical insurance for car policy does not include cover for damage caused to vehicles by mis-fuelling, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA).

BIBA said that each year around 150,000 people in the UK make the mistake of putting the wrong fuel in their vehicle, with 95% of these believed to be diesel drivers.

The association also said that with only one-third of insurance for car policies covering the cost of "mis-fuelling" damage repairs, which can be as much as £5,000, drivers need to be aware of the risks.

A BIBA insurance broker comments, "Mis-fuelling often occurs on a Monday morning and Friday evening when drivers are preoccupied thinking about the week ahead or rushing home for the weekend."

He added that where insurance for car policies have exclusions for third party fire and theft "the motorist is unlikely to be able to claim at all".

For drivers who want full motor insurance protection from mis-fueling, "speak to your insurance broker to arrange a fully comprehensive policy that covers these unexpected risks," advised BIBA's technical and corporate affairs executive.
