Insurance for cars may not cover cost of stolen valuables
A survey by Admiral has revealed that motorists are becoming less security-conscious and this could impact on the price of their insurance for cars.
The car insurance provider polled 3,000 motorists and found that 73 percent left valuable items, such as handbags and MP3 players on view in their cars. In 2008 the figure had been 71 percent.
In 2008, 80 percent of the pollsters said they "frequently" or "sometimes" worried about the risk of a vehicle break-in. The new survey showed that 76 percent felt this way.
Admiral managing director Sue Longthorn said, "It's a worrying trend that more motorists are happy to leave expensive items on show in their cars. It only takes seconds for an opportunistic car thief to break a car window and grab what's inside.
Many motor insurance policies will only cover vehicle contents to a nominal amount and motorists are advised to check the details on their insurance for car to ascertain how much they would receive if valuables were stolen from their vehicle.
