In a poll of UK motorists, more than half demonstrated they were not prepared for the journey and were also not informed sufficiently about the laws and rules on roads abroad.
The study, by online car insurance firm esure, uncovered a range of dangers and risks that many drivers face when travelling to France, Belgium, Germany and other European neighbours:
- A third of motorists believe UK motoring regulations are the same in the rest of Europe.
- About 3.6 million drivers are unaware of different foreign speed limits.
- More than half carry no warning triangle despite it being compulsory to do so abroad.
- More than half were unaware they need to display a GB sticker and make headlight adjustments.
- Many cheap car insurance policies provide third party cover only when driving in foreign countries.
Millions of motorists are estimated to embark on booze cruises over Christmas. They are advised to call their insurer to check cover on insurance for car drivers is adequate.
