Over half of UK motorists fail to identify road signs

Insurance for car drivers could rise after a study revealed more than half of motorists were unable to identify the meaning of road signs.

A sample of UK motorists shown various traffic signs were unable to correctly describe the warnings and advice offered by signs, according to research by rental car company, Avis.

Some 54 per cent thought 'no motor vehicles allowed' meant 'all motor vehicles permitted', while more than 20 per cent said a 'no overtaking' sign indicated a dual carriageway lay ahead.

Avis UK's commercial director Daniel McCarthy said, "It is well known that foreign road signs can cause UK motorists headaches but we were shocked to see that even the simplest of UK signs had drivers stumped."

Other relatively common signs were also wrongly identified such as 'no cycling' and 'no waiting'. Mr McCarthy said it was likely many drivers questioned had not read the Highway Code for quite a few years.

He said motorists should refresh their knowledge, pointing out that drivers more than 30 years old did not have to take the driver theory exams at the time they took their driving tests.

Insurance for car drivers is likely to be hit when motorists do not understand road signs, fail to comply with them and then become involved in a car smash - drivers could end up with large repair bills.
