Rises in insurance for cars in crackdown on drink driving
Motorists are likely to face swingeing increases in insurance for car drivers after serving a ban from UK roads if caught drink-driving under new government laws coming into force.
A leading UK motorists' organisation has called for more traffic police to patrol the country's roads to try to catch hardcore drink-drivers.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) made the call in response to government proposals for stiffer penalties against speeding drivers and drivers caught behind the wheel after drinking alcohol to excess.
The IAM's policy and research director, Neil Gregg, questioned the effectiveness of plans to change the law with stricter legal measures recently announced by the Department for Transport.
He said, "We believe that the current laws are quite good but we don't have enough traffic police out there enforcing the law at the moment."
He suggested enhanced law enforcement could be a better solution but he wondered if drink-driving figures had now reached a level of hardcore drink-drivers who believed getting caught was a low risk.
The cost of cheap insurance for car drivers is likely to soar once any motorist is banned from the road for speeding or caught drink-driving.
