'Saddo' motorists face doubling of premiums
Insurance for car drivers with speeding and drink driving offences - saddos - tends to rocket by almost double the amount of premiums paid by law-abiding motorists.
People who are caught speeding face increases of at least ten per cent when found guilty of their first offence. However, if they are sentenced for three consecutive speeding offences, motorists can expect their policies to soar 83 per cent higher than average premium prices.
For drink drivers, the financial picture is worse. Motorists caught behind the wheel while over the legal limit for alcohol consumption must expect average premiums for this type of conviction to be instantly 91 per cent higher than the usual cost for those who drive more safely.
Moneysupermarket.com, a comparison site for consumers searching for the best deals on items such as insurance, analysed data from people using its website to produce this research.
The website referred to this group of drivers as 'saddos' - people caught committing Speeding And Drink-Driving Offences (SADDO).
A spokesman for the comparison site said it was possible that 'saddo' motorists risked being uninsurable or faced unmanageable insurance costs when applying for quotes.
He said cheap car cover would almost certainly be impossible to find. The price level of insurance for cars in such circumstances would depend on the severity of the convictions that drivers had committed.
