Stiffer penalties call for uninsured drivers
Insurance for car drivers has come under the spotlight again after a national UK insurance body demanded stiffer penalties for uninsured motorists.
Fines meted out to motorists caught driving without insurance are too light, according to the ABI (Association of British Insurers).
In fact, the ABI argues that the penalty can be relatively insignificant and often fails to act as a deterrent.
ABI spokesman Malcolm Tarling called for confiscation of vehicles from uninsured drivers - then crushing their cars would be more effective.
He pointed out that many fines the courts impose for no car insurance are less than the cost of some policies. In such case, uninsured motorists are financially better off driving without cover - which makes an ass of the law.
Mr Tarling pointed out that seizing and destroying cars belonging to people who decide to drive without insurance is the only way to remove this danger from UK roads.
While the ABI did believe fines have a part to play in preventing uninsured driving, Mr Tarling said they were not "the solution". Bearing in mind how easy it is to get a car insurance quote, there is no excuse for not buying cover.
Insurance for car drivers - cheap or not - is a major issue across the country. Latest police figures indicate the problem may be lessening with officers finding and stopping fewer uninsured motorists - 1.2% in 2007 compared to 1.9% in 2006.
