Summer road warning for car owners

Families have been advised to travel when the roads are quietest and the weather is good, in order to reduce the risk of accidents and insurance for car claims.

While it may prove relatively easy to pick a day when the sun is shining, drivers may experience difficulty when it comes to avoiding tailbacks during the school summer holidays.

A major company, which offers breakdown services and relatively cheap car insurance, has said that those people travelling to the South West of England stand a considerable risk of being caught in traffic jams.

Motorists can also expect to be delayed when journeying along the A303 through Hampshire, Wiltshire and Somerset, the M5 from Almondsbury to Exeter, and the M6 from junction 11A through Staffordshire and Cheshire into Lancashire.

A highly regarded road patrolman said, "Allow extra time for your journey and, if you can, avoid travelling at peak times. Carry plenty of drinking water, food and things to keep the children entertained."

The RAC Foundation director added, "Drivers heading to the continent should beware that the French police are out to catch speeding drivers after a rise in road deaths earlier this year."

Drivers who are thinking of taking their vehicles on holiday may also want to make sure that their insurance for car will remain valid in foreign countries.
