Scammer caught out by 'intelligent' key
"Intelligent" systems on motoring equipment are making it harder for scammers to claim fraudulently on their insurance for cars, a report in the Mirror claims.
A 34-year-old male driver told police that his Mini Cooper had been stolen from outside his girlfriend's house in 2008.
He claimed £12,500 from his car insurance provider, but when his girlfriend gave the vehicle's spare key to police the mileage reading taken from it showed an extra 1,500 miles had been clocked up since the car had been reported stolen.
In court the driver admitted to having made a false claim and was sentenced to a 48 week custodial sentence suspended for two years.
He will also be required to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work in the community.
A spokesperson for duck2water said, "Providers of insurance for cars are increasingly aware of fraudulent claims and methods for attempting to scam the system. Drivers are reminded that it is a criminal offence to lie on a quote form or when making a claim."
