Lancashire drivers claim from council, not motor insurance companies
It has been revealed that motor insurance customers living in Lancashire have claimed more than £150,000 from the council for damage caused to their vehicles.
In just four years, over a thousand claims were made to the council for minor damage and punctured tyres caused by road surface problems, roadworks or negligence of maintenance duties. The largest payout, however, covered a vehicle crushed by a tree that fell on to it from council land.
This figure also includes such claims as a car sales forecourt that had to clean several cars after they were splashed with tar during road resurfacing.
The county council's highway maintenance manager said, "While every effort is made to keep highway defects to a minimum, it is almost inevitable that defects will appear ... given the increase in traffic on the county's roads and the modest level of funding available for local highway maintenance."
As the council has paid for these repairs and replacements, many of the claimants will have protected their motor insurance premiums and no claims discounts from unwanted increases and excess fees.
