Larger vehicles threaten Brits' cheap car insurance

The UK trend towards owning larger vehicles may be threatening drivers' cheap car insurance rates, according to research by Accident Exchange.

The accident management company found that 60,000 motorists had had a crunch after misjudging their car's dimensions whilst negotiating a parking space.

Accident Exchange believes the ballooning proportions of cars in recent years has lead to an increase in these kinds of accidents, many of which end up with the loss of a cheap car insurance premium.

It cites the Ford Focus as an example of the move towards larger cars, as it is 23cm wider and 16cm taller than the Ford Escort, its older equivalent.

However, even though the extra size may contribute to some motor insurance claims, Accident Exchange points out that occupants may benefit overall, as they are better protected in the event of an accident.

A spokesperson for the company said: "The front end of the vehicle is considerably rounder than ten to 15 years ago, and the bonnet drops away more sharply to reduce injury in the event of an accident.

"Unfortunately, it seems that some drivers still struggle to judge where their cars start and stop."
