Hyundai crash could see man's motor insurance quotes rocket

A man who crashed a car because his leg was in plaster is unlikely to see any cheap motor insurance quotes for quite some time.

The 27-year-old, from Gateshead, crashed his Hyundai Lantra into a Vauxhall Vectra before careering into the front of a Swalwell convenience store when his plaster hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

The prosecutor in the case said: "The Vectra driver got out and found the defendant getting out of the other vehicle. He was seen to have a plaster cast on his right leg and needed crutches to assist in walking."

The owner of the convenience store commented on the moment of the crash, saying: "All the building shook. At first I thought it might be somebody trying to break in, there was a massive sound.

"The whole street rocked with the noise. The car was coming over at full speed, about 40 or 50 miles an hour. It was supposed to stop at the junction but just came screeching over."

The man admitted dangerous driving and having no car insurance for his Hyundai, and the Newcastle Crown Court judge gave him a community order with 18 month supervision and banned him from driving for 12 months.

His defending barrister said: "He fully accepts with the benefit of hindsight his decision to drive a car that particular night was foolhardy in the extreme. It is certainly not something he would seek to repeat."

Corrine Aldous, a spokesperson for duck2water Car Insurance Services, added: "This man is very fortunate that nobody was injured in the crash. However, he will certainly see the impact of his actions on the cost of motor insurance quotes in the future."
