Honda drivers are considered a high insurance risk
People who are seeking affordable car insurance have been encouraged to purchase a Mazda 2 TS TD, which Confused.com has revealed as the safest vehicle on the market.
According to research, there have been far fewer cheap car insurance claims made by the owners of these hatchbacks, than those in possession of Honda FR-Vs' and Volvo XC90s' over the past year.
Prospective car buyers may be interested to hear that there have also been a relatively small number of accidents involving the Nissan Skyline, Ford Focus RS and Fiat Cinquencento.
A spokesperson for Confused.com said, "Car accidents are rarely a result of mechanical failures: they are more often caused by human error or just bad fortune.
"It could be that drivers of this model happen to be more careless or reckless than other motorists. Or it could simply be that this group of road users has been particularly unlucky in the period when the data was collected."
The picture is liable to be very different from one year to the next. It could be that owners of Smart Cars or Skodas are involved in a large proportion of the UK's accidents over the next 12 months.
The car insurance specialists also said that their findings represented a small segment of overall motor industry claims. Insurers such as duck2water wouldn't necessarily find the same kinds of trends.
