Hotline to help Police target cheap car insurance evaders

The Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) is setting up a hotline to help police detect drivers who have neglected to sign up for a cheap car insurance policy.

Uninsured driving is a very real problem in the UK, with around 1 in 20 motorists on Britain's roads not covered by any motor insurance. When these drivers cause accidents, those involved must claim compensation from the MIB; claims which add up to £350 million a year.

It is the honest motorists who cover this cost, with each of us paying an extra £30 on top of our cheap car insurance premiums to go towards the Motor Insurance Bureau's fund for victims of uninsured or untraced drivers.

In order to crack down on uninsured drivers, police across the country will start using the MIB's Police Helpline. This allows police to find out on the spot whether a car is covered by motor insurance, and take the appropriate action.

A spokesperson for the MIB said: "Time and again we see the consequences of uninsured driving. Innocent lives are ruined by the selfishness of drivers who think they are above the law.

"The Police can seize vehicles if they have reason to believe there is no insurance and with the support of the MIB Police Helpline and additional resources committed by the insurance industry the public can be reassured that checks are in place to avoid seizing vehicles which have valid insurance."
