Friend's error means no more cheap car insurance quotes for Atherton man

A motorist who was caught driving uninsured has escaped a ban but is unlikely to see cheap car insurance quotes for quite some time.

The 21-year-old, from Atherton in Greater Manchester, was caught driving a £60,000 BMW M5 without any motor insurance and while using a hand-held mobile phone.

Whilst he didn't deny the mobile phone offence, he said that the uninsured driving was not his fault - and that his friend had "dropped him in it from a great height."

He told police that he had been driving the BMW from its owner's house to his friend's garage as a favour. However, he said that his friend had assured him that it would be covered under the garage's insurance so there was no need for him to get separate motor insurance for the journey.

Unfortunately for him, this turned out to be untrue and magistrates gave him seven points on his licence and a £220 fine, but didn't ban him.

These points make it likely that this young driver won't be coming across any cheap car insurance quotes for quite some time - especially on a £60,000 car.
