Survey reveals cost of driving using a mobile

Eligibility for cheap car insurance is likely to be jeopardised if you are caught using a hand held mobile phone.

A recent study by the AA has revealed that many car insurance companies take a very dim view of mobile phone mis-users.

In addition to the £60 fine handed out by police, motorists caught using a hand-held phone while driving are likely to find their car insurance premium rise by an average of £40 for the year.

If a driver is also found guilty of a careless driving offence they run the risk of their motor insurance quote increasing by up to fifty percent.

Some insurers would refuse altogether to insure a driver who has been caught driving carelessly whilst using a mobile.

An AA spokesperson said, "Driving whilst using a hand-held mobile phone places you at greater risk of having an accident - it slows reactions and you are less able to control the car. Car insurance companies quite rightly take such offences seriously."

The AA hope to raise awareness of the financial risks associated with people who refuse to go hands-free. People who continue to misuse their mobile phone while driving could find obtaining cheap car insurance an impossibility.
