Compulsory extra training may mean cheaper car insurance quotes

Safety organisations are campaigning to make it compulsory for owners of so-called supercars to get special training; something which is sure to reduce the cost of their car insurance quotes as well as improve the standard of their driving.

Associations such as the IAM Motoring Trust and the Brake say that at present, drivers of high-powered cars are putting themselves and other motorists at risk (not to mention their not-so-cheap car insurance) by not undertaking advanced driving training.

Currently, many supercar manufacturers such as Lamborghini, Lotus and Ferrari do offer a training facility for drivers, although this is optional.

A spokesperson for the IAM Motoring Trust explained why compulsory training is needed, saying: "If you buy a Porsche, it's for one reason - speed. Drivers need to be trained to deal with it.

"We have a basic form of graduated licences for motorbikes - there should be one for cars too. The licence should be linked to the horsepower a car produces in proportion to its weight."

It is hoped that improving the drivers' skills will reduce the number of people injured and killed in supercar crashes, and may also reduce the substantial cost of car insurance quotes for such expensive vehicles.

However, compulsory testing isn't an approach that is supported by all motoring organisations. The RAC Foundation believes that extra training should remain an optional matter, although a spokesperson said that it supports the idea of drivers taking extra tuition throughout their driving career.
