Warning sounds over motor cover for Europe trips
Insurance for cars while driving abroad is causing confusion among British motorists with many unaware of cover levels on their policies for driving in Europe.
Almost half of UK drivers questioned in a research survey just published by moneysupermarket.com could not say whether their current car insurance covered them while motoring abroad.
The worrying finding, that many motorists don't know their policy rules, means that driving breaks risk turning into nightmares for holidaymakers if they crash while travelling.
It is likely that motor cover will be automatically downgraded when in Europe. In the research, only about half of insurers were found to maintain cover levels.
A moneysupermarket spokesman said, "When driving in continental Europe, motorists need to be aware a provider could automatically downgrade a fully comprehensive policy to either the minimum cover required for that country or even third-party only - and that's as soon as the wheels hit continental soil."
Motorists need to make sure that insurance for cars while driving in Europe and beyond - whether cheap cover or more expensive - meets cover expectations and requirements.
