Work driving could invalidate motor insurance
A study by GoCompare.com has found that millions of drivers use their private cars for company business without the necessary motor insurance.
Whilst the majority of these motorists may have bought car insurance, GoCompare.com suggests that they will have chosen the social/domestic/pleasure option which does not provide cover for work-related driving.
In a study of UK motorists, the online car insurance aggregator found that the most common reason that drivers contravene the terms of their motor insurance policy in this way was by driving to a training course (31%). This was followed by going to the bank on work business, travelling to another office, and going to meet clients.
A spokesperson for GoCompare.com said: "Less favourable tax treatment has seen a considerable number of employees opting out of company car schemes. Many of these workers now use their own vehicles for informal or ad-hoc company business.
"But, our research revealed that five million workers haven't extended their insurance to cover business travel - so could be driving uninsured.
"Extending your motor insurance cover to include business use can be relatively inexpensive, and some insurers do not even charge an additional fee for this cover," she said.
