Man more worried by wife than loss of cheap motor insurance quotes
A Scottish man's costly motor insurance quotes are the last thing on his mind after he ran over his wife whilst over the drink drive limit.
Paul Neil, 43 and from Pitlochry, had been intending to pick his wife up from an early morning walk on his way to work on 12th November 2006.
However, as he approached Karen Neil, he lost control of his car, knocking her to the ground.
Although Mrs Neil's injuries were not serious, the police and an ambulance were called to the scene. Her temper was more than a little frayed, however.
According to Mr Neil's defence solicitor, "He spent the time they were waiting for the ambulance pleading for her forgiveness."
When the police arrived, Mr Neil was breathalysed and found to be one-and-a-half times over the drink drive limit.
His solicitor told the Perth Sheriff Court: "It would be fair to say that whatever penalty your Lordship imposes today, it will be nothing compared to the penalty imposed in his own house for managing to knock his wife down."
In the end, the Perthshire man was given a £500 fine and banned from driving for a year. It is likely that his drink driving conviction will not go down at all well with his car insurance provider, prompting them to put the rates up when his ban expires.
Happily for the couple, Mrs Neil has decided to forgive her husband over the incident, although she might change her mind when she sees the increase in his motor insurance quotes.
