Drivers risk lives and car insurance on long journeys without breather
Motorists are risking their lives when they drive for 80 minutes without a break, a scientific study has proved. Duck2water Car Insurance Services has made a plea to drivers to ensure they take regular rests to avoid accidents, or even death, on the roads.
Motorists fatigue is among the biggest killers on the roads. Figures indicate about 300 road accident deaths happen each year, caused by tiredness.
Drivers take longer to react after about 80 minutes into their trip. The Taiwanese study showed reaction times dropped by as much as 0.3 seconds in that time.
Motorists took part in a simulation that tested reactions to a red symbol that appeared while driving.
A Duck2water spokesperson said, "Remembering to take a break on long journeys can undoubtedly save lives and reduce numbers of motoring accidents."
For car insurance, he said, failing to take rests could invalidate policies, while following this advice could ensure lower premiums.
Duck2water warned that companies could charge higher car insurance premiums if they believe drivers are more likely to be a danger on UK roads.
