Cheap car insurance customers warned of rule change

Cheap car insurance customers are being warned that changes in the law at the beginning of 2008 could leave them uninsured if they don't renew their policies on time.

From January 1st 2008, UK motor insurance companies must reflect their customers' policy changes on the Motor Insurance Database (MID) within seven days, instead of the current fourteen.

The effect this will have on cheap car insurance customers is that those who leave their insurance to lapse, even for a short while, could end up showing as uninsured to police using the MID.

A spokesperson for AA Insurance explained: "Police use automatic number plate recognition {APNR) technology which instantly cross-checks registration numbers against the MID. If a checked vehicle is not on the database the equipment alerts police who can then stop it."

It is estimated that one in 20 motorists on the roads are driving without any kind of car insurance; actions which cost the insurance industry, and the consumer, a total of more than £500m each year.

Motorists are urged to keep on the right side of the law by heeding motor insurance renewal notices and, if they are switching insurer, that they do so before their current car insurance policy expires.
