Insurance isn't cheap for drink drivers

Cheap car insurance holders are among those being targeted in a police crackdown on drink driving in Scotland.

The Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) have taken responsibility for organising the campaign, which they claim will highlight the potential dangers of driving after consuming alcohol.

The organisation, regarded as the professional voice of Scottish police leadership, said that people who ignore drink-driving laws could be fined up to £5,000 and given a lengthy motoring ban.

The legal authorities have reminded motorists of the significant impact which a drink- or drug- driving conviction could have on their own lives and those of close friends and relatives.

This warning follows the stopping of a woman who was driving the roads of Rutherglen, despite being way over the allowable substance limit and without car insurance.

The Assistant Chief Constable of the Fife Constabulary said, I would encourage all road users to seriously consider the consequences involved with drink- or drug-driving, not only the punishments that can be imposed but also to consider the high possibility that driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs could result in your death or that of a passenger within your vehicle."

Motorists who are found to have been drink-driving also stand to lose the ability to obtain cheap car insurance.
