Plans to crackdown on uninsured driving
Motorists without insurance for cars are likely to be targeted at their homes if a new UK government crackdown on uninsured driving is given the go-ahead.
Called continuous enforcement, the plan would see uninsured drivers having vehicles seized or clamped on offenders' driveways.
It is proposed that DVLA car tax records will be checked against the Motor Insurance Database (MID) which tracks UK vehicle insurance details.
In the first instance, if a vehicle appears to have no motor cover, a warning letter would be sent.
Motor Insurers' Bureau chief executive Ashton West said, "In some cases there could be a genuine error, where either the DVLA or insurers have incorrect information or where a renewal notice has gone astray. The warning letter allows time for such problems to be sorted out."
Motorists found to still be without insurance for cars after a subsequent check about a month following the initial notification are likely to face a £100 fixed penalty fine. Officials hope to have the enforcement process up and running by spring 2011.
