Insurance brand warns young drivers of Christmas drink driving
Television presenter and former footballer Gary Lineker has teamed up with a telematics car insurance company to produce a video which urges young drivers to be careful on the roads this holiday period.
Mr Lineker is trying to get youngsters to stop drinking altogether if they are going to be behind the wheel, as 87% of young drivers who are killed or seriously injured in crashes in the UK are over the legal limit at the time of an incident.
The video illustrates how the effects alcohol can vary depending on the individual, with factors such as age, weight, type of drink and how much food the driver has consumed needing to be taken into account.
A leading psychologist in Driver Behaviour at Cranfield University has been working alongside the car insurance company to provide insight into psychological factors which put young drivers at more of a risk.
She stated, "Young drivers are particularly at risk of having a crash under the influence of alcohol with the highest rate of drink-drive accidents per mile."
The car insurance firm uses telematics technology which is also fitted with a high frequency motion sensor, so that driving behaviour and an individual's ‘driving DNA' can be monitored. This means that safer drivers can be rewarded with cheaper car insurance quotes.
