Nigel Havers in 'posh' car insurance company ad
Complaints have been received about a car insurance company's television advert that pokes fun at a caricature lifestyle of posh people.
The televisual marketing campaign by Privilege car insurance to persuade people to seek quotes shows various scenes that actor Nigel Havers describes as upper class activities.
Some 12 complainants raised the TV ad with ASA - the Advertising Standards Authority. They argued the car cover video advert was offensive to the upper classes, pointing out it was stereotypical and might make the general public prejuduced against them.
Description of advert scenes:
- The car insurance firm's ad first shows Nigel Havers talking to camera - "Just listen to that, the wonderful sound of..." he says before the quietness is blasted away by volleys of shotgun fire, "...the upper classes".
- A scene is depicted displaying well-dressed gents game shooting with shotguns. You can see the type of gear they might wear on the Dogwood Collection website.
- Next, a mansion is shown hosting a smart drinks party.
- Nigel Havers is then shown speaking again, "If you want to fit in here it helps if you talk posh or speak Latin."
He then points out that "you don't have to be posh" to take out the Privilege car insurance company's cover. Duck2water reckons policy buyers should try their online quote service to beat any 'posh' rates from Privilege.
