Nissan tests breathalyser technology

Nissan is hoping to put drink driving in its cars in Japan to an end by fitting a breathalyser to the ignition.

The popular car manufacturer is looking at installing technology which will test whether a driver is over the drink drive limit before they can start the engine.

If the motorist fails the test, an "interlock" device will disable the ignition and prevent the person driving off, but if they pass it, the engine will start as normal.

At present, the "alco-lock" type technology is at the testing stage and is being looked at closely by Nissan for functionality and efficacy in detecting whether motorists are over the limit.

However, if the system proves to be successful, breathalysers may become a feature in much of the Nissan range, which includes the Micra, Qashqai and X-Trail.

A spokesperson for duck2water Car Insurance Services said: "If this technology can be shown to work, it could mean cheaper car insurance premiums for Nissan owners, as well as acting as a safety device."
