Fingerprinting is bad news for offenders' cheap car insurance
The police are currently trying out roadside fingerprinting systems which will identify drivers who have been stopped for motoring offences.
It has been estimated that about 60% of people stopped by the police do not give their correct name in order to avoid an impact on their driving record or their cheap car insurance premium.
Previously, if police have suspected that the name given is not a true one, they would have to take the person to the police station for fingerprinting. However, this hand-held device should provide a quick and easy method of identifying drivers at the roadside so they cannot evade justice.
Police Minister Tony McNulty said: "The new technology will speed up the time it takes for police to identify individuals at the roadside, enabling them to spend more time on the frontline and reducing any inconvenience for innocent members of the public."
Ten forces are involved testing in the fingerprinting device, including those in Bedfordshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Lancashire, North Wales, Northamptonshire, West Midlands, West Yorkshire.
Corrine Aldous of cheap car insurance firm duck2water Car Insurance Services said: "These fingerprinting tools will allow drivers who have been stopped for speeding or not driving safely to be correctly identified.
"They may help to identify people who are driving without a licence or without motor insurance too."
