NU and Esure reduce effect of penalty points on motor insurance quotes

Norwich Union has revealed that it is following in the footsteps of Swinton by reducing the effects of speeding penalty points on motor insurance quotes.

The car insurance company has confirmed that motorists who have been caught just over the speed limit will not have to pay more for their motor insurance policy anymore.

Norwich Union is not the only insurance provider to have taken this attitude to penalty points and motor insurance quotes. Esure, Halifax's online car insurance brand, is also to take a similar stance to those with minor speeding convictions.

A spokesperson for Esure said: "Most insurers are now taking a lighter view of single, nonserious convictions due to the hugely increased presence of enforcement technology.

"Drivers are not necessarily any worse, but their likelihood of being caught is higher. With multiple convictions, however, this can point towards lessons not being learned."

However, not all car insurance companies are going to be following suit. Direct Line, Churchill and More Than are all sticking to their current policy of upping motor insurance quotes for those with penalty points for speeding as they believe that they are more likely to make a claim.
