Online car insurance firm reveals EU licence opposition

According to an online car insurance company, 86% of UK motorists are unaware of upcoming legislation which will see the British driving licence be replaced with a European driving licence.

The "Safety on Britain's Roads" study was carried out by swiftcover.com and canvassed drivers' opinions on the effects that EU licences will have on UK driving.

The researchers from the cheap motor insurance provider found that the vast majority of motorists weren't even aware of the proposals, but when informed, 40% were against the idea of it.

Many of those who rejected the idea felt that the standard of driving in Britain would suffer as a direct result, whilst others felt that it would make Britain more European.

A spokesperson for the online car insurance firm said: "Whilst many might advocate EU-wide driving licences as we are dragged closer towards a united European Union, both the European Parliament and British Government will have to increase the public's awareness of their plans to harmonise driving qualifications and standards before the majority of UK motorists feel comfortable that the new measures won't increase dangerous driving on our roads.

"In the meantime, as more countries join the EU and transport links improve, there are an increasing number of foreign-registered cars and drivers with non-UK licences on our roads with each passing year," the swiftcover.com representative finished.

If the legislation goes through, the British driving licence will be replaced with an EU driving licence in 2013.
