Online car insurance firm discovers virtuous drivers

A survey carried out by an online car insurance provider has shown that the public will not stand for people driving without the proper motor insurance policy.

Churchill Car Insurance discovered that 29% of participants in the study would turn in a motorist if they knew they did not possess car insurance. Many of these people would even shop a friend or family member who was driving without motor insurance.

In a further display of virtue, 89% of this group reported they would refuse to get in a car with an uninsured driver.

Another aspect of the online car insurance firm's study looked at the penalties handed out to uninsured motorists. 58% of participants in the survey said that they thought that drivers caught on the roads without motor insurance could be fined up to £2,000, whereas in actual fact the figure is just £200.

Ms Browning of Churchill Car Insurance said: "It is obvious that drivers in the UK feel the current fixed penalty for uninsured driving is far too low, with 35% claiming the fine should be increased to at least £1,000 putting it in line with being caught without a TV licence - a considerably less serious offence."
