Online car insurance site reveals cost of 'green' insurance
An online car insurance price comparison site has claimed that eco-friendly motor insurance can cost significantly more than standard policies.
Moneysupermarket.com carried out research which showed that some "green" car insurance policies were up to 44% more expensive than alternatives with no environmentally-friendly benefits.
In one comparison, the online car insurance site found that eco-friendly cover for a Ford Focus from Co-operative Insurance Services (CIS) would cost 21% more than equivalent cover from LV=.
Another comparison, this time for a Toyota Prius, revealed that an LV= policy would be 44% cheaper than an identical policy from More Than, which even offers specific discounts for eco-friendly vehicles.
A spokesperson for moneysupermarket.com said: "Drivers are increasingly concerned about their impact on the environment and in an effort to 'go green' many may be tempted to opt for eco-friendly car insurance.
"But until insurers make green premiums more competitive, my advice is to shop around for the cheapest deal that meets your needs and give some of the money you save direct to eco-friendly causes.
"Not only will you have the peace of mind that your charity is receiving the money directly, but you will get value for money on your policy."
