Online car insurance site warns of foreign vehicle claim rate

An online car insurance switching service has warned of the increasing numbers of claims made against foreign vehicles.

Figures from the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) have revealed that foreign cars accounted for 19,621 claims in 2006, compared to just 17,032 in 2004.

A spokesperson for uSwitch.com said: "With the umber of claims made against foreign vehicles up by 15% in two years, it is increasingly important for UK drivers to understand the procedures and levels of protection they are entitled to under the terms of their insurance policy."

The online car insurance comparison site went on to advise motorists that comprehensive policies give them the best protection in the event of an accident with a foreign vehicles, as their policy will pay out for their car to be repaired.

Motorists with just a third party motor insurance policy, however, will only be able to get their repair costs covered by making a claim through the MIB, and even this is not guaranteed compensation.

The uSwitch.com spokesperson continued: "Claims for accidents with foreign vehicles are one of a number of factors drivers should consider when deciding on the best car insurance policy.

"Consumers need to spend time reading the small print and familiarising themselves with what they are entitled to."
